What is Co-Star?
Co-Star is an astrology app, virtually a quirkier, online version of horoscopes one could find in a newspaper. However, unlike a newspaper, Co-Star personalizes messages for each of its users, taking information like birth place and time along with data from NASA to create your astrological chart. Created in 2017 by Banu Guler, the app is a way for young people to implement the belief into their lives, not only learning about it, but putting it into practice, with 25% of women ages 18-25 having downloaded the app.
Co-Star uses AI to formulate and write its messages, combining information from astronomy and random, whimsical “Dos” and “Don’ts” lists, and pieces of wisdom. Co-Star prides itself on answering “the unknown,” so it’s no surprise that it’s become so popular. An app that gives all the answers? Sounds good to me. Oftentimes, I find that though general, the advice the app gives me can actually apply to my own life, guessing things like your state-of-being. This is not a coincidence, and unlike its motto to “Blame it on the stars,” not solely the planets aligning. The app bases its answers off of your personal interaction with it, including a feature called “The Void,” in which users can ask the AI feature any question they want, receiving eccentric, astrological advice in return. This is a sneaky way it makes it seem as though it knows its user, “guessing” somewhat personal anecdotes about them to keep said person hooked.

So, how much of it is real and how much of it is real and how much of it is phony?
In truth, I know nothing about astrology. However, its ancient roots go far beyond modern-day understandings. Even with its tricky use of pre-known information, astrology has been used to make predictions, give advice, and tell things about oneself long before Co-Star existed.
Though potentially creepy-sounding, Co-Star’s sentiments are not actually unsettling or dis invalidating. In fact, they are intended to be empowering, perhaps inspiring users to take the app's advice and make better choices using it. I find something about the platform appealing, a comfort in receiving these notions. Additionally, the app's layout is easy on the eyes, its black-and-white aesthetic feeling quite calming for the nervous system.
Should you download it?
I myself think of Co-Star similarly to the way I approach the daily Wordle: another low-effort but satisfying activity. Though I was cynical at first, I enjoy Co-Star, even occasionally finding myself sharing particularly accurate Daily Updates with friends who also use the platform. Another appeal of the app is its social aspect, allowing you to look at your in-app friends' horoscopes and compatibility charts between the two of you. Co-Stars initiative in teaching and encouraging astrology, with a focus on Millennials and GenZ in particular, provides an opportunity for forming community, understanding, and connection.
